Grant Information for Chemistry Graduate Students

Brought to you by the Tufts Chemistry Grad Student Council (CGSC)

Updated October 21, 2003

What’s here

I recently spent some time researching grant opportunities for chemistry graduate students. I have compiled the most popular programs into the table below to help you start your search for funding. They are divided into stipend programs, which essentially award you a research assistantship, and travel grants, which provide you with money to attend conferences. Most of the funding is for US citizens or permanent residents, though there are a few programs with no citizenship requirements. **There is a lot of funding for female graduate students.**

Why apply?

Applying for a grant is useful experience for future research work. Of course there are numerous benefits to actually receiving the grant also, not the least that you will receive $money$ for your research and you can add to the “Awards” section of your resume or CV.

Where to look next

This should be considered merely a start in a search for funding. Here is a list of web resources which may help broaden your search.

GrantsNet [www.grantsnet.org]

Tufts ASE research site [ase.tufts.edu/gradstudy/research/]

Community of Science (COS) Funding Opportunities (this has quite a bit of international information as well) [fundingopps2.cos.com/]

In addition to the fellowships above, the various ACS divisions may provide support for research and travel. Contact your division (Carbohydrate, Inorganic, Medicinal, etc.) through the ACS homepage [www.chemistry.org].

Other fellowships may be available in biomedical or “quantitative sciences” from NIH, see their fellowship page [http://grants1.nih.gov/training/nrsa.htm].

***Please note that the Howard Hughes Medical Institute has ended its predoctoral fellowship program as of 2003.
