Chemistry Department Open House a Huge Success
The annual Chemistry Department Open House is always a lively event, but this Saturday the 8th of March was especially successful with a large turn out of prospective graduate students, current graduate students, and faculty. The rain did not seem to deter prospective students from attending and participating in the days activities. The event attracted a range of prospective students from the Boston region and from across the country. The day was started with a continental breakfast and some welcoming remarks by Art Utz the head of the graduate admissions committee.
One of the highlights of the day was the poster session held on the first floor of the Pearson laboratory. Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty discussed their research projects with the prospective students, and interested students were invited to tour the research labs. New faculty member Clay Bennett traveled from San Diego California to present his research at the poster session and to meet prospective graduate students. The poster session and the following lunch gave students a chance to mingle with department members in a relaxed setting. Students were then given the opportunity to have individual meetings with faculty members. The individual meetings were designed to facilitate candid discussions between faculty members and interested students.
Activities for the open house also included: campus and department tours, and a question and answer session with members of the chemistry graduate student council. The afternoon was spent at the Omni Imax Theater at the Museum of Science, followed by dinner at the Elephant Walk restaurant. Prospective student Celeo Guifarro enjoyed the day, particularly the poster session commenting that “it gave me an insight of the different types of research that is going on at Tufts”, and the relaxed atmosphere allowed him to interact with department members.
Thank you to everyone that contributed to the success of this event!
