"Field Analytical and Site Characterization Technologies Summary of Applications " The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, Washington, D.C., November 1997; EPA-542-R-97-011. 1) http://www.clu-in.org/chartext.htm#application - is the Hanscom Air Force Base Case Study published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency documenting time and cost savings accrued when implementing the dynamic workplan/adaptive sampling and analysis process. The publication describes the quality of data that can be produced  in the field or laboratory using technologies developed at Tufts University and its analytical instrument manufacturing collaborators. Thermal desorption gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in combination with the Ion Fingerprint DetectionTM data analysis software was used to provide screening data for VOCs in soil at the rate of 30 sec/sample and quantitative data in 15 min/sample. These technologies were also used to simultaneously analyze soils for PCBs and PAHs in 10 min/sample. Quantitative data was produced to support the risk assessment study. A new microwave digestion procedure was also developed to analyze 22 of the EPA target analyte metals by inductively coupled plasma/optical emission spectroscopy. The digestion procedure was capable of extracting all metals in one step. Recoveries were within the EPA required range including Ag and Sb.

2) http://www.clu-in.org/video/hanscom.htm - shows the Hanscom Air Force Base videotape made for this project. It describes the benefits found by the EPA and state regulators, Air Force environmental restoration staff, and their consultants. The videotape ties together the dynamic workplan process, field analytics, and findings from the case study. It also describes the technologies that drive the benefits obtained.
