Neel Joshi to Join the Chemistry Faculty

We are pleased to announce that Neel Joshi will be joining the Department of Chemistry at Tufts University in 2026
Neel Joshi

Dr. Joshi is a pioneer in the field of living materials, a field that develops materials, sensors, and tools using living cells. Living materials have exciting capabilities beyond those of regular materials and biomaterials. Dr. Joshi’s research explores living materials with useful functions and how they can be programmed to regenerate, self-heal, and respond to changes in their environment. Dr. Joshi applies living materials to solve pressing problems facing humanity, including sustainable biofabrication, environmental remediation, and drug delivery. Dr. Joshi will bring expertise in protein biochemistry, biomaterials, and synthetic biology to the Department of Chemistry, expanding our strengths in biochemistry research and teaching and increasing our overlap with ongoing research in the Biology, Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering departments.

Dr. Joshi received a PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and performed postdoctoral research at Boston University before starting an independent career in 2010. He comes to Tufts from Northeastern University, where he has built a world-leading research program and a strong track record in teaching and mentoring.

Dr. Joshi will join the Department in July 2026.
